Wherever you live, it’s probably not too far from a dirt track. You should go sometime.

Sounds like a future Oppo meet to me. Never been to one.

It’s a habit that I picked up in North Carolina. It’s quite an experience, and now that I’m back in PA I still go to races. To me it’s a lot more fun than watching a race on tv.

I grew up going to the dirt track races in Minnesota, continued when I lived in Florida, and have failed at finding a track in Oregon... I know there’s one somewhere...

I’ve been itching all winter waiting for opening night. That was this Friday night and wouldn’t you know it, it rained and they cancelled. Got to wait till next week now.

My local track was supposed to start last weekend but it was postponed due to snow in the forecast. Yesterday it was 80 here. Much better day for racing.

Good luck. There’s got to be one somewhere.

I’ve been wanting to go to a dirt race myself, too. Still a little ways to the start of the season in upstate NY, though. Albany-Saratoga’s season opener is on the 20th, Lebanon Valley on the 21st.

When I lived in Central PA we were at Williams Grove every Friday night. I got spoiled with that. When we moved back to the Outer Banks we ended up with a severe drought of dirt racing. We’ve got one track an hour and a half away but it’s terrible so I don’t bother. I’d basically have to drive 3 hours or more for good dirt racing.

Cotton Grove Speedway south of Eugene is about it, according to an online directory.

My closest track is 60 miles away and the season opener isn’t until the 13th of next month so my withdrawals are real.... I miss having a track 15 mins away

I live in Eastern PA and go to Grandview Speedway now, but I caught the racing bug when I lived in Greenville NC. County Line Raceway in Elm City NC was the place to go, but we’d usually make one or two trips a year to Dixieland Speedway near Elizabeth City. They used to have one big late model race each year that had fewer restrictions and brought in good drivers.

There are some good big block modified drivers in upstate NY. I went to the World of Outlaws Championship in Charlotte NC a few years ago, and there were a lot of drivers from NY and PA.

In NC it was a 45 mile drive every Saturday night. Now I have a 21 mile drive, but I’m in PA so the season is a little shorter.

Dixieland just doesn’t do anything for me. Been a couple times but it’s been probably ten years since I’ve gone back. My dad would go when the ARDC midgets were in town but that was it. Anymore I just don’t have many weekends off and I’m traveling most weekends to work monster truck shows. It’s hard to be motivated to go a few hours for a dirt race after you spent the last ten weekends or so working different events.

Dxieland was fun about once a year for the big late model race, but I can understand how if you’re used to a great track like Williams Grove, Dixieland might not cut it. County Line Raceway is a much better place to go. They run the I-95 Challenge, which alternates between CLR, Clarys (near Roanoke Rapids), and Fayetteville Speedway. It pulled in fast cars from all 3 tracks and was fun. They also host super late model races.

It’s interesting to me how the racing varies between PA and NC. In the south, Late Models are king. In PA, it’s all sprint cars and modifieds.

We also went to Hagerstown regularly which was fantastic for late models. I’ve done Virginia Motor Speedway as well but at the time it was kind of a one lane track with minimal passing. The Dirt Track at Charlotte is a fantastic facility but every time I went to the finals the track was so dry slicked after the first race it wasn’t worth staying for everything afterwards.

We went to the dirt track at Charlotte a few years ago for the finals. Maybe we lucked out, because they were running competitively high, middle, and low around there in the late models.

I’ll have to check out Hagerstown sometime. Grandview runs late models but the big block modifieds are the main event.

I’ll take rain over snow I guess.

I’ve heard rumors of one out near Banks, but I’m still investigating. Eugene is a bit of a trek!

I haven’t been back to Charlotte for anything other than the monster truck show there in quite some time so perhaps they’ve figured out a better way to manage conditions, especially now that they’ve added modifieds into the show too. The last time we went the track was amazing qualifying night but the next day the track was easily 2 seconds or more slower. Just turned into a dry slicked, blue groove track with follow the leader racing. It was so frustrating.
